Pressbox (Press Release) - It is no surprise that trans-gender author Sarah Henley’s international thrillers have an air of authenticity about them.
The 70-year-old from Bristol has just released her latest five-star rated novel, Anastasia to the Rescue, to critical acclaim.
Packed with fast-paced espionage, double-dealing, and danger round every corner, Sarah’s latest explosive novel will keep readers hooked.
But parallels can be drawn from her own formative years, as Sarah faced mental and physical torture, as well as attempts to take her own life, as she fought to be recognised as a female.
Sarah explained: “In my early life, having become aware that I was born into the wrong body, I attempted suicide one day when I was seven.
“I attempted suicide again at nine, 10 and 12 before my father forced my mother to take me to a child psychiatrist.
“The psychiatrist told my mother they would make me well and cure me of the problem of wishing to be a female.
“I was dressed as a girl, then laid on a bed, strapped down and had electrodes fitted to my shaved head, then I was repeatedly told, upon wearing any female clothes, I would remember this - an electric shock that went right through my body and hurt my brain.
“The following week I was dressed as a girl and given an injection to make me sick, with the words being told to me over and over, that every time I wear female clothes, I will be sick.
“I left at the end of the week and returned to school, uncured, still wishing I was a woman.”
Despite continued suicide attempts and lengthy interruptions to her schooling, Sarah excelled academically.
She passed a total of 10 O Levels, was promoted to a prefect, and excelled at literature.
Sarah added: “I loved literature at school.
“I would have all my coursework completed months before it was due and handed in ready for marking.
“I then spent my weekends, writing for the other students - who couldn’t write a long story, let alone a play or a poem - so, I made a lot of money from writing during that year.”
Although the widowed grandmother-of-six went on to have a distinguished career as an electrical engineer, Sarah’s return to literature later in life has been equally successful.
Her latest novel, Anastasia to the Rescue, follows the fortunes of the daughter of a Russian spy and her well-connected bodyguard.
Like all of Sarah’s previous novels, the thrilling storylines, enchanting characters, and international locations make for an edge-of-the-seat read.
Anastasia to the Rescue has been described by critics as ‘suspenseful’, ‘a page-turner from start to finish’, and ‘a great read’.
