Pressbox (Press Release) -
Nudge over Bridget Jones, there’s a new 30-something love-obsessed lady on the block.
And, if the screenwriter of the Helen Fielding novels is to be believed, Unexpectedly Stellar is every bit as good.
New author Emma Henry has just released her hilarious debut novel to a string of enthusiastic five-star reviews.
Screenwriter Andrew Davies, who has worked on the likes of Les Misérables, Mr Selfridge and War and Peace as well as the first two Bridget Jones films, is among the many readers who have been won over by Unexpectedly Stellar.
He called it: “A delicious romcom – as funny as Bridget Jones’s Diary.”
Emma’s debut has also been described by reviewers as being ‘a romcom with something a bit deeper and sharper to it’ and ‘a genuine laugh out loud book’ and ‘an incredible rollercoaster ride of emotion’.
Reviewer Jenny S stated: “A fabulously engaging story - completely relatable but not predictable at all.”
Unexpectedly Stellar follows the fortunes of 30-something Stella after she is ditched by her cheating boyfriend.
Homeless and unloved, the PA from London is forced to move in with Olive, a septuagenarian living in Fulham.
Author Emma explained: “We meet Stella Halfpenny as she discovers that her seemingly happy life with her boyfriend, Jackson, is a sham.
“She finds he’s been lying about his age, his real name, his dead parents (very much alive) and, worst of all, he is moving to New York. With someone else.
“Forced to start over, she vows to avoid all men unless they are absolutely safe, or as her friend Kim puts it, “So, you want an unattractive, unappealing, unwanted bloke on the off-chance that he might not cheat on you because no one else would touch him with a barge-pole?
“There is life after Jackson, but is Stella brave enough to embrace it?
Emma, who has worked overseas for most of her life, now lives in Switzerland. She has previously written about her travels in Nepal, but it was only after her job with the UCI, the International Cycling Federation, came to a sudden and unexpected end that the 56-year-old finally found the time to complete her first novel.
The overwhelming response since the publication of Unexpectedly Stellar has convinced her to begin work on a sequel.
Emma added: “While ‘chick lit’ is not the preferred reading genre of many of my friends, they all loved it.
“Many said that the book made them laugh-out-loud – I love a book that makes me laugh, makes me smile, and I am happy that my book is now doing the same for so many others.”
