Blood Washes Blood by Frank Viviano
published by Century on 1st March 2001

Frank Viviano is the foreign correspondent at-large of the San Francisco Chronicle, based in Paris. As a prize-winning journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle (based in Paris) he has covered war zones throughout the world and is the only two-time recipient of the World Affairs Council’s Thomas More Storke Award for Achievements in International Reporting. In 1992 he narrowly escaped death in the ruins of Yugoslavia when renegade militia took him captive.

It was this particularly unpleasant kidnapping by Bosnian extremists from whom he narrowly escaped that persuaded him to enter a more reflective period of his life and to research his own family’s remarkable history.

Blood Washes Blood is a gripping personal memoir. It is the story of Frank Viviano’s seven-year journey to solve the mysteries of the murder of his great-great grandfather and of his family’s hidden past - and in the process, to explore the violent contradictions of his own world. It is a strongly atmospheric narrative, which deftly weaves history, suspense and a personal search for identity into an evocative saga; it is something of a real life Godfather. Award-winning journalist Frank Viviano uncovers dark and mysterious secrets revealing how his great-great grandfather’s life and death played significant parts in the origins and power struggles of the Mafia.

Despite two decades as a foreign correspondent, on the trail of killers and their victims, Viviano found himself confronted in Sicily by ever more baffling clues and coincidences, an impenetrable code of discretion and a maze of bureaucratic dead-ends, all linked with the island’s tortured history and the continuing blood feuds of organized crime. As the book unfolds and the mysteries are solved they merge in a single story with an astonishing climax. The revelation, when it comes, hangs on the ancient Sicilian proverb that gives the book its title: Lu sangu lava lu sanga, blood washes blood - the torrent of unforgiving vengeance that flows from an unforgivable offence.

Frank Viviano will be touring the UK from
28th February to 4th March and is available for interview.
