Pressbox (Press Release) -
Love them or hate them, but football pundits take centre stage in a hilarious new novel by Arsenal fan Ross Paterson.
The 49-year-old solicitor from South-East London took advantage of work drying up during the first lockdown to begin work on his first full-length novel.
The talented writer, who has previously published an anthology of sports-related short stories, released Matchday in the spring to critical acclaim.
Set in the 1992-93 season, at the outset of the Premier League, Ross’ hugely enjoyable romp takes plenty of pot shots at the game’s so-called experts.
As ex-players queue up for a shot at providing their ‘expert’ opinions and analysis to the new, growing armchair audience, Matchday charts a pundit’s unpredictable rise to the top of the profession.
Ross explained: “I have thought for a long time that football pundits were worthy of ridicule, being paid a lot of money for speaking the obvious.
“I have been a football fan since I was a boy and have drawn on footballers over the years to create the characters.
“Although the main plot of Matchday is fictitious, some of the storylines are based in part on true-life football events and incidents.”
Matchday follows the fortunes of ambitious Clyde Benjamin who is hoping to forge a career as a pundit on the new satellite television channels.
As an outspoken and provocative black pundit in a white man’s world, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers’ centre-forward is a striking new addition to the viewers’ television screens.
With fans across the country lapping up the new television coverage, it would seem the future is bright for the pundit.
But ruthless Clyde, who will go to any length to get the better of his ex-pro studio rivals, is set for a fall as a skeleton emerges from the cupboard.
Ross explained: “Clyde has made an instant impact as a pundit at the dawn of the Premier League and satellite coverage.”
“He sets out to destroy his rival pundits’ careers by whatever means.”
“But his own feisty punditry soon sparks a feud with striker, Steve Collyer.”
“And as Clyde’s career is on the up, a betrayed fan comes out of the woodwork seeking revenge.”
The gripping Matchday has already attracted glowing reviews from captivated readers.
Ross is currently considering bringing his pundit protagonist Clyde back for a sequel – this time as a fledgling manager.
