Pressbox (Press Release) -
One of the country’s leading consultant surgeons has come out of retirement to cut deep into the world of international terrorism.
Anthony Young spent almost 30 years as a practising consultant in the NHS.
The 76-year-old, who trained at Cambridge and Harvard, also held the position of Medical Director of Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals.
But since his retirement, Anthony has concentrated on his other passions – painting and writing.
As well as exhibiting his art in the UK and France, he published his first novel, The Professor and Women, back in 2014 to critical acclaim.
Anthony, who splits his retirement between south London and the south-west of France, has finally released the sequel to his explosive, psychological debut.
Preludes and Aftermaths is another riveting cross-border thriller featuring retired gynaecology professor Lucien McCulloch – only this time he has both the IRA and ETA for company.
Anthony said: “This is the second book about the retired doctor who unwittingly gets caught up in foreign adventures which act as a counterbalance to the complications of work, family, love and ageing.
“In this book Professor Lucien McCulloch’s wife, from whom he was estranged, has died and he needs a new stimulus in his life.
“In Preludes and Aftermaths an elderly Irishman has drowned after driving off a coast road in northern Spain. As he was drunk nothing more is thought of it until it emerges that he was the link man between the IRA and ETA, the Basque separatist group. MI6 know his successor needs to be found, together with the weapons cache in France.”
Anthony’s riveting novel introduces readers to ETA member, Julieta Ibarra, who will only play ball with MI6 if the lover from her youth, Lucien, can act as an independent ‘referee’.
Packed with convincing characters, continual twists and fast-paced action, Preludes and Aftermaths has already reached the top five in Amazon’s crime charts.
Lucian McCulloch’s first outing in The Professor and Women was described by enthusiastic reviewers as ‘a brilliant debut’, ‘a great book’, and ‘a really enjoyable read’.
Set across Ireland, France and Spain as well as London, Anthony’s sequel has been met with similar plaudits from readers.
Away from writing, the grandfather-of-eight remains a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons and of The Royal Society of Medicine but will continue his new passion as a writer of fiction.
